ABSTRACT

Since the time of ancient Greece, architects have admired a certain proportion for the height and width of a building (Figure 8.1). The proportion is based on a particular rectangle produced according to a particular rule. The rule states that if you cut the rectangle into a square and another smaller rectangle, the sides of the smaller rectangle have the same proportion as the original (Figure 8.2). The resulting rectangle is known as the Golden Rectangle, and the ratio of the larger side to the smaller is called the Golden Ratio.
