ABSTRACT

Before we begin a structural reliability analysis, we must first determine how we define such terms as “safety” and “reliability.” The first section of this chapter introduces the notion of a “limit state,” which is useful in defining safety and reliability. Then, in later sections, some techniques for structural reliability analysis are described and examples are presented.
