ABSTRACT

Radio surveillance or, more correctly, radio-wave surveil-lance, is one of the largest categories of surveillance next to visual surveillance and is strongly associated with audio surveillance through the broadcasting and interception of sounds transmitted through radio waves. Radio waves typically travel in all directions from the transmitting source and are not difficult to intercept, so privacy has always been a concern for radio communications in war zones or even on cordless phones used in the home. Individual inventors and amateur radio operators have had a significant effect on the development of technology and shaping of the radio industry. During periods of unrest, governments often restrict radio broadcasting, sometimes turning communications control over to the military. An Enhanced Driver’s License incorporates Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and “multiple layers of overt, covert and forensic security features.” RFID has some practical applications as an inventory control mechanism.
