ABSTRACT
We introduce here the basic concepts of knowledge discovery and data mining. Models and techniques are presented together with the main approaches used in parallel and distributed knowledge discovery. In particular, in Section 1.1 we introduce the main motivations of knowledge discovery and data mining, discuss some examples, and describe the knowledge discovery process models. Section 1.2 discusses the most important data mining techniques, and Section 1.3 analyzes dierent forms of parallelism that can be exploited in data mining algorithms. Finally, Section 1.4 focuses on knowledge discovery and data mining in distributed environments.
