ABSTRACT

This chapter deals with a couple of studies for modeling natural behavior for a human-like robot. It introduces a work related to deictic interaction. When talk about objects, often engage in deictic interaction, using reference terms with pointing gestures. The chapter describes modeling natural behavior for deictic interaction. In casual communication, people often use reference terms in combination with pointing, such as saying “Look at this” while pointing at an object in order to draw others’ attention to the object. Reference terms are important for quickly and naturally informing the listener of an indicated object’s location. Deictic interaction has often been studied. One of the major study focuses was the recognition process: Methods were proposed to recognize the object by using a pointing gesture, an utterance, and relevant information. Some studies integrated the recognition process with the expression process, though they address only static environment. In contrast, little study addressed the facilitating processes in deictic interaction.
