ABSTRACT
What is the nature of a complex system? A dictionary definition of the word “complex” is “consisting of interconnected or interwoven parts.” Both of the terms “interconnected” and “interwoven” are the essence. Qualitatively, to understand the behavior of a complex system, one must understand not only the behaviors of the parts but also how they act together to form the behavior of the whole.
