ABSTRACT

ARP (Address Resolution Protocol) cache poisoning is a technique used to perform Denial-of-Service (DoS) or Man-inthe-Middle (MiM) attacks. A DoS attack based on ARP cache poisoning prevents a host from communicating with other hosts in a LAN (Local Area Network). A MiM attack is used to sniff network traffic between hosts in a LAN. This attack is characterized by the rerouting (redirecting) of network traffic between hosts to a malicious host. To understand ARP cache poisoning-based attacks, it is important to first understand the ARP and ARP cache. A brief description of the ARP and ARP cache is presented here.
