ABSTRACT

Liquid-liquid equilibrium (LLE) data of multi-component systems are important in both theoretical and industrial applications design of many chemical processes and separation operations. The LLE investigations of ternary systems have been the subject of much interest in recent years (Aljimaz et al., 2000; Arce et al., 1995; Arce et al., 2001; Garcia-Floreset al., 2001; Garcia et al., 1988; Ghanadzadeh and Ghanadzadeh, 2003; .Ince and Ismail Kirbaslar, 2003; Jassal et al., 1994). Dilute formic acid solutions are not easily separated from water and, therefore, extraction of formic acid from aqueous mixtures is still an important problem. Various organic solvents for extraction of dilute formic acid solutions from aqueous mixtures have been investigated and reported in the literature (Kollerup and Daugulis, 1985; Pesche and Sandler, 1995; Zhang and Hill, 1991). However, from the experimental results, cumene was chosen as the best solvent for recovering formic acid from aqueous mixtures (Ghanadzadeh and Ghanadzadeh, 2003).
