ABSTRACT

Sustainability assessment involvesmany perspectives but three key steps can

be identified. Firstly, there is the integration of economic, environmental, and social assessments and the assurance that adequate levels of performance

in all three criteria are met. Secondly, there is the projection into the future to ensure that standards in economic, environmental, and social criteria do

not deteriorate over future time horizons; this involves postulating a number

of scenarios against which proposed projects or plans (or lack of them) can

be examined. Thirdly, there is the establishment of sustainability indicators

which enable quantification of performance and progress over time.
