ABSTRACT

Systematic planning is essential for achieving improved sustainability.

Planning is necessary at many levels in industry, spanning research and

development for new technologies, further development of established

process technologies, design and construction, plant operations, and a range

of related business activities. Planning for sustainability encompasses many

divergent activities. Aspects such as adequate funds, time, personnel and

technology, future demand patterns, trends in population and economic

development, government policy on economic incentives and taxation,

as well as environmental regulation must all be considered. Planning is

also necessary at government level in developing improved regulatory

frameworks and in providing incentives and support for sustainability

initiatives in industrial, commercial, and domestic activities.
