ABSTRACT

This guide to performing a standard 12-lead electrocardiogram (ECG) recording is based upon the current clinical guidelines of the Society for Cardiological Science and Technology in the United Kingdom. Anyone performing a 12-lead ECG recording should have received appropriate training and been assessed in their skills by a competent practitioner. Before making a 12-lead ECG recording, check that the ECG machine is safe to use and has been cleaned appropriately. The 12-lead ECG should be recorded with the patient in a recumbent position on a couch or bed, in a warm environment, while ensuring that the patient is comfortable and able to relax. Placing the limb electrodes more proximally on the limbs can alter the appearance of the ECG and it is therefore important that the person interpreting the recording is aware that an atypical electrode position has been used.
