ABSTRACT: The well-known correlations of fundamental soil properties with index properties have been carefully examined, using data accumulated from the soil investigations at the Port and Harbour Research In stitute (PHRI). All soil samples were retrieved by the Japanese standard sampler. No unique relation between tj)’ and Ip or {sjp) and Ip could be found. The distinguished characteristics of Japanese clays are large <()’ and (s jp ) in spite of having large lp. It is found that most Japanese clays contain considerable amount of diatoms. The influence of diatom was studied using artificial mixture of clay with diatom. It is found that (sjp) and <()’ increase remarkably, owing to even small contents of diatoms.
