ABSTRACT

Of the many stimulants that are used for intoxication,

including methamphetamine, amphetamine, dextroamphe-

tamine, and even methylphenidate, by far the most com-

monly utilized is methamphetamine. All of these stimulants

may be taken orally or, after crushing, intravenously, and

freebase methamphetamine, known as ‘ice’, may be either

smoked or intranasally ‘snorted’. Methamphetamine has a

half-life of 6 12 hours, and urine toxicology may be positive for up to 24 hours. Importantly, urine toxicology may yield

not only false negatives, but also, in the presence of selegiline

or bupropion, false positives.
