ABSTRACT

The neuroleptic malignant syndrome is a rare and potentially

fatal disorder characterized, in its full expression, by the

tetrad of delirium, rigidity, fever, and autonomic instability,

which occurs secondary to an abrupt diminution of dopa-

minergic tone, due to either the use of a dopamine-blocking

agent, such as an antipsychotic, or, much less commonly, the

discontinuation of a dopaminergic agent, such as levodopa.
