ABSTRACT

Systems with structural walls show important advantages from the point of view resistance to lateral forces, lateral stiffness, and construction (execution) as compared with frames. Behavior of wall systems and of their most used components – cantilever and coupled walls – is examined. According to the overall cantilever behavior of the wall system under seismic actions, rules for proper conformation are formulated and recommendations for their conceptual design are defined. Due to their layout and proportions the structural walls systems require specific analysis approach. Simplified and accurate analysis of structural walls is presented. Design and detailing of structural wall systems including superstructure and infrastructure with their components and mutual interaction are analyzed. Case study about a 19-story residential building with two-level basement illustrates the design and detailing steps of a typical structural walls system.
