The protein bands identified by serum protein electrophoresis may be divided into major and minor protein bands (Tables 4.1 and 4.2). The major bands constitute those that are virtually always seen in normal serum (fibrinogen is included because it is visualized in various circumstances). Minor bands are those that stain weakly or not at all in normal serum but may affect the electrophoretic pattern in a variety of

clinical situations. The exact position of some of the bands will vary slightly with the methodology employed.
