ABSTRACT
It is almost impossible to give a number of clinical examples without coming across a patient suffering from perhaps the commonest of all neurotic symptoms, namely depression. Several such patients have already been mentioned and will be used in the following discussion. As will be seen, although the basic concepts in the psychopathology of depression are extremely simple, the subject is one of the most complex in this whole field.
