Physiological changes in pregnancy

One of the most fundamental systemic changes of normal pregnancy is fluid retention, which accounts for between 8 and 10 kg of the average maternal weight gain of 11-13 kg. There is some increase in intracellular water but the most marked expansion occurs in extracellular fluid volume, especially circulating plasma volume (Figure 4.1).
