ABSTRACT

The infections that cause congenital abnormality are summarized by the acronym TORCH (toxoplasmosis, rubella, cytomegalovirus, herpes). Many other infections may adversely affect a fetus or neonate and these have been resummarized as STORCH5 (see box on page 194). However, pregnancy loss may occur in the first trimester in association with any acute infections in the mother (e.g. influenza).
