ABSTRACT

Physiotherapy aims to optimize functional ability, health and

wellbeing, through a holistic problem-oriented approach to

maximize quality of life. There is little evidence to support or

refute physiotherapeutic intervention for individuals with

sarcoidosis. However, in clinical practice a problem-based

approach indicates the areas where physiotherapy can be of

benefit in symptom management. The characteristic symp-

toms of interstitial lung disease (ILD) such as sarcoidosis

where physiotherapy may be appropriate are:

= dyspnea progressive, often resulting in altered breathing patterns and anxiety;

= cough dry, irritable and possibly productive; = deconditioning and associated peripheral muscle dysfunc-

tion resulting in loss of exercise tolerance and functional capability.
