ABSTRACT

A rolling hiatus hernia occurs with a correctly positioned gastro-oesophageal junction, whereas displacement indicates a sliding hiatus hernia.

2 D Richter’s hernia occurs when only part of the bowel wall is involved in the hernia. This leaves the lumen patent, allowing the normal passage of luminal contents. Therefore even if the hernia is strangulated, there are no signs of bowel obstruction.

3 I Incisional hernias are common after abdominal operations. Bowel prolapses through the defects created in muscle and fascia by the surgeon’s knife. As the neck of these hernias is very wide, they have an extremely low risk of strangulation.
