ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION Impairment of consciousness can occur from either local (i.e. cranial) or generalized causes (Table 24.1). Many critically ill patients will have impaired consciousness as part of their presentation. The initial assessment and management of the patient with impaired consciousness is the same as that of any acutely unwell patient and focuses on the A B C D E system (see Chapter 23).
