ABSTRACT

The lateral ligament complex of the ankle acts as a lateral stabilizer and prevents inversion. It consists of superior and inferior groups. The superior group, which forms part of a syndesmosis, consists of anterior and posterior tibiobular ligaments. The more important inferior group has three main ligaments:

• The anterior talobular ligament (ATFL) is seen best on T2-weighted axial images of the ankle at the level of the tibiotalar joint as a homogeneous low-signal structure running anteriorly from the bula to the talus.
