ABSTRACT

MRI is not indicated routinely in assessing the local extent of newly diagnosed breast cancer. There are, however, specic indications where it has been proven to be of benet if breast conservation is being considered: • lobular cancer on histology • assessment of tumour size when there is clinical and radi-

ological discordance about the size of the known tumour • Paget’s disease of the nipple

Its usefulness is still being assessed in patients with dense breast tissue and a family history of breast cancer that is not high-risk.
