ABSTRACT

An abscess is a localised collection of pus. Diseases dominated by abscess formation are suppurative.

There is a wide range of causes. They include physical and chemical injury, irritation and infection. The necrotic tissue of malignant tumours may resemble an abscess. Infection may be direct, indirect or bloodborne. Foreign bodies provoke abscess formation and stitch abscesses appear within the tracks of sutures. Abscesses form in infected surgical wounds and at sites of injuries that penetrate skin or other lining epithelia.
