ABSTRACT

The hexaxial wheel depicts each limb lead as an imaginary line between a negative pole (the centre of the hexaxial wheel) and a positive pole (a point towards the periphery of the wheel). Electrical activity is said to be moving towards a particular lead when it travels from the negative to the positive pole, which is seen as an upward deflection in the lead on the final ECG tracing. You can therefore appreciate that if electrical activity is travelling away from the lead (i.e. from the positive to the negative pole), this will cause a downward deflection in the respective lead.
