ABSTRACT

Paget’s disease of the bone is a condition of bone remodelling. Excessive bone resorption due to increased activity of osteoclasts causes osteoblastic new bone formation. It may affect various areas of the skeleton. The new bone formed is structurally abnormal and hence may lead to deformities and fractures. It may also lead to local complications secondary to bone expansion. There is a tendency to affect the axial skeleton, long bones and skull, but virtually any bone in the body may be affected. The disease can be divided into the following three phases: lytic phase, intermediate or mixed phase and sclerotic phase.
