ABSTRACT
Complement is a component of the innate immune system. It consists of a cascade of proteins that result in the formation of a membrane attack complex, which can destroy invading bacteria or recruit other cells to the inflammatory response such as neutrophils (below). Their proteins can also act as opsonins (see definition on page 156).
