ABSTRACT
Safe and effective management of acute pain is an integral part of surgical practice. Although the physical status of the patient, the degree of trauma and the available techniques may be very different, the principles involved are similar whether the patient is recovering from major surgery on a general ward or being managed on an HDU or ICU.
