ABSTRACT
A fistula is an abnormal communication between two epithelial lined surfaces. A sinus is a blind-ended track communicating with an epithelial surface. A fistula by definition is always abnormal. A sinus may be normal or abnormal, e.g. a cardiac sinus is normal, whereas a pilonidal sinus is abnormal.
