Safe disposal of faeces 344 Summary 345 Sources of information and further reading 345

The wilderness exerts a strong attraction to ever increasing numbers of people for recreation and restoration. By its very nature, the wilderness is remote from the infrastructure of modern society, including treatment of water, prepared food and its storage (including refrigeration) and the safe disposal of faeces. The principles of food poisoning and food hygiene are the same in the wilderness as in other environments, but additional considerations for the drinking of sufficient water are essential for survival. Diarrhoeal illness is probably the most common infection asso - ciated with wilderness travel.
