ABSTRACT

The measures that may be taken to minimise this complication range from preventative to early diagnosis and treatment. Preventative measures must guard against vomiting and aspiration. This complication most commonly occurs at the time of induction of GA. Avoiding or reducing the rate of GA in obstetric units will significantly reduce the risk of this complication. Although it may occur during the administration of regional anaesthesia, the risks are not as high as during GA. Where an operative delivery is planned, as in the case of elective Caesarean section, or anticipated, an empty stomach is essential. However, although this may be practicable for elective cases, it is not feasible in patients during induction of labour. During this process, a light diet should be provided as it is easier for this to be absorbed. Overnight fasting ensures that the stomach is empty before surgery.
