ABSTRACT

First, the symptoms she presented with will determine whether she has treatment or not. If fibroids were identified incidentally (e.g. during a routine examination for another gynaecological or non-gynaecological problem), then the best option may simply be observation. If on the other hand she was symptomatic, then the severity of the symptoms will influence the treatment she has and how soon this is offered. Heavy periods associated with anaemia, too frequent and heavy periods, pressure symptoms on the renal tract especially if associated with obstruction (hydronephrosis), associated infertility and the cosmetic effect of the fibroids are important factors that will not only influence the timing but type of treatment she is offered.
