ABSTRACT

A 29-year-old woman has been brought to the emergency department by her husband. He is worried that she is unwell and has been getting worse over the last few days. She describes feeling her heart beating rapidly, difficulty catching her breath, feeling very anxious, hot, sweating a lot, generally weak and confused. She had varicose vein surgery five days ago but had not gone back to work as a schoolteacher because of her symptoms. She was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism secondary to Graves’ disease six months ago. She was on carbimazole but stopped taking it a week before her surgery as she was getting a rash. She is taking no other medications. She does not smoke nor drink alcohol.
