ABSTRACT

Pre-eclampsia remains one of the main causes of maternal mortality and morbidity worldwide. It manifests as new hypertension ≥140/90 mmHg and proteinuria ≥2+ on dipstick analysis or >0.3 g/24 h, after 20 weeks’ gestation. Women who become hypertensive and either have symptoms or have abnormal haematological or biochemical results should also be regarded as having pre-eclampsia until proven otherwise.
