ABSTRACT
From 1% to 2% of babies born to women who carry group B streptococci (GBS) will develop clinical infection. Although this transmission rate is low, the fatality rate in affected babies is high (15–50%). Premature infants have a 10–15 times greater risk of acquiring GBS than do full-term infants.
