ABSTRACT

In this chapter we discuss various diseases that cause nonpyogenic inflammation of the brain. In many of these conditions the inflammatory process also involves the meninges, so that the condition produced is a meningoencephalitis. If the white matter is preferentially involved, the term leukoencephalitis is used, while polioencephalitis denotes inflammation predominantly affecting the gray matter. Inflammation of the spinal cord is referred to as myelitis, and of the brain and spinal cord as encephalomyelitis.
