ABSTRACT

This chapter and the following one aim to provide an overview of tumors of the nervous system. It is not our intention to deal comprehensively with their natural history, incidence and etiology. These can be found in reference works on tumors of the nervous system such as those listed at the end of the chapter. What we hope to provide in these two chapters is a guide to the diagnosis of tumors, indicating the signposts that we have found useful along the way. Management of surgical specimens, interpretation of smears, and brief consideration of the role of immunohistological techniques in tumor diagnosis can be found in Chapter 4.
