ABSTRACT

It may be assumed that the cause is an eosinophil adenoma of the pituitary, which may be either pure or mixed with chromophobe tumor. The tumors may reach a considerable size, and cause extra trouble by compressing the optic tracts, the nerves in the walls of the cavernous sinus, or the hypothalamic region of the forebrain. A block of the sphenoid bone should be removed at post mortem (see p.5); after fixation, coronal sections, including the upper cranial nerves and internal carotid arteries, may be examined histologically. Immunohistological staining can be carried out on sections of the tumor (see p.230).
