The cut-up

A brain should be left soaking in formalin for 10-14 days or more. If it is sliced after a week, the uneven colors seen on the cut surfaces usually betray incomplete fixation, and the inner tissues will not be ready for histological examination. Photography, too, will give unsatisfactory pictures. As it is advisable to have one’s camera ready before starting on the dissection, a word on equipment will be inserted here.
