ABSTRACT

Introduction All human interactions have psychodynamic determinants. Whether it is a conversation with the milkman or an intensive psychotherapeutic exchange, psychodynamic processes influence all interpersonal interactions. The interactions that occur in Interpersonal Psychotherapy (IPT) are no exception to this rule, and in many ways the successful delivery of IPT hinges on the ability of the therapist to understand and manage them. This demands a great deal of skill as the time limit used in IPT requires that these processes be recognized and dealt with quickly.
