One of the major disadvantages associated with conventional planar radiography is its inability to produce sectional information. The image produced on film represents the total attenuation of the X-ray beam as it passes through the patient. It is impossible to distinguish any depth information on the film image. Tomographic techniques have been developed which will separate these superimposed anatomical details and produce slice images which convey depth information.
