ABSTRACT
The emergence of modern medical science in the western world also meant the development of treatment into hitherto unknown territory. An often quoted American case, which is persuasive although not authoritative in the UK, defined a patient’s common law rights:
Every person of adult years and sound mind has a right to determine what shall be done with his own body.
