ABSTRACT

A similar inhibition of cholesterol synthesis occurs in cells such as fibroblasts in tissue culture when low density lipoprotein cholesterol enters by the LDL receptor route, and it is assumed that such a mechanism also exists in extrahepatic tissues in vivo. There is evidence that the effect of free cholesterol is mediated through suppression of transcription of the HMG-CoA reductase gene and an acceleration of degradation of the enzyme protein. Other factors believed to influence cholesterol biosynthesis in liver and possibly other tissues are summarized in Table 1.2 (page 14).
