ABSTRACT
The ‘easy-to-follow tips’ listed below give a light approach to this important but often ignored topic. It is important to remember that guidelines are exactly that, and that all health professionals have a legal obligation to promote a safe working environment for patients, themselves and colleagues. This is especially important for surgeons given the small, restricted area they inhabit, filled with specialist equipment and staff of diverse backgrounds – plus students. All theatre staff share this responsibility, regardless of what background or qualifications they have.
