ABSTRACT

Cysts and abscesses of the liver in the neonatal period are

uncommon. Hepatic cysts presenting in infants are usually

simple, unilocular cysts, with polycystic liver diseases pre-

senting later in childhood or in adults. Most abscesses in

infants are pyogenic with parasitic infections occurring in

older children or adults. Cross-sectional imaging studies

(ultrasound, computed tomography, magnetic resonance

imaging) can typically make work up and localization

relatively straightforward. Antenatal diagnosis of liver cysts

is now more common with improving scanning technology.

Treatment, however, still requires experience and judgment to

prevent recurrences or complications.
