ABSTRACT

Tumors in the newborn are relatively rare, comprising only

about 2.5% of all childhood malignancies.1 The majority of

these tumors are benign lesions, but malignancies can occur.

Overall, neuroblastoma is the fourth most common cancer of

childhood, comprising 710% of all malignancies diagnosed in children younger than 15 years of age. However, neuro-

blastoma is second only to teratoma as the most commonly

diagnosed tumor in the neonate and is, overall, the most

common malignancy in the newborn, accounting for 30% of

all tumors in this age group, with an estimated prevalence of

26 per 100000 live births in the United States.2,3 With the increasing use of perinatal imaging, this number is likely to

increase.
