ABSTRACT

The aim of this chapter is to introduce the basics of electroencephalographic (EEG) recording generally and outline both clinical and clinical-research practices. The use, analysis and interpretation of EEG and other neurophysiological measures require some commitment of time and resource,1 and it is not the aim of this chapter to train the reader to expert level. Readers in pursuit of greater in-depth knowledge are referred to Binnie and Stefan2 for an overall review of EEG in psychiatric settings and to specialist books such as Engel3 on epilepsy and Luck4 for further information on the event-related potential (ERP).
