ABSTRACT
For the purposes of clinical management of patients it is helpful to distinguish non-dependent substance misuse from dependent use. The criteria for the diagnosis of substance problems for both the International Classification of Diseases, 10th revision (ICD-10)1 and the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th edition (DSM-IV)2 are outlined and discussed in more detail elsewhere in this chapter.
