ABSTRACT

Congenital vertical talus is a relatively rare foot deformity that has often been considered to be a rigid form of flatfoot. However, in severe cases the medial longitudinal arch is not merely collapsed but is reversed such that the sole of the foot is convex. This has led to the condition also being called congenital convex pes valgus. The latter term is probably more appropriate as it describes the deformity more precisely. It is also important to be aware that in some flatfeet the talus may be aligned somewhat vertically when the ankle is in the neutral position; the tarsal alignment becomes restored on plantarflexion of the ankle. This should not be confused with the true vertical talus.
